Embroidery Workshop for African and Caribbean seniors in Barnet.

‘Barnet’s Windrush Stories Exhibition’, a vibrant celebration of the rich history and contributions of the Windrush generation. This unique exhibition was a collaborative effort between the Barnet African & Caribbean Association (BACA), Barnet Council, and Middlesex University, sheds light on the hidden Black history of the Borough.

For our Workshop, we asked ‘What does ‘Home’ mean to you?’ The seniors (aged 65+) from BACA and members of the public embroidered a word/family name/spiritual word into a fabric print taken from the iconic carpet on display in ‘The Front Room’, which is on permanent display at the Museum of the Home. This installation, curated by Dr. Michael McMillan explores the migrant experience of African-Caribbean families setting up home in the UK in the 1950/60s.
