That’s a Big Bracelet! Textiles Workshop

In April 2024, we hosted a 'That’s a Big Bracelet’ Workshop and showcased Elizabeth's miniature Tudor Haberdashery in the Great Chamber in Sutton House, 2 and 4 Homerton High St, London E9 6JQ.

In this Workshop we took inspiration from the orange tree in the painting of Mrs. Sadlier. The orange tree resembles happiness and prosperity, and we remembered Mary Fillis - a Black Moroccan woman who worked as a seamstress in London during the Tudor age.

Using orange coloured African print fabric, upcycled denim, sequins, decorative fabrics, vintage costume jewellery and badges, each person made their own statement bracelet, guided by Elizabeth.

Techniques: Découpage, embroidery, beading, hand sewing. Materials: Upcycled denim, African fabric offcuts, upcycled costume jewellery, sequins, trimmings saved from landfill, and badges.

Make a Miniature Tudor Locket at Sutton House

Hackney Community Group 'Young At Heart' meet in Sutton House, 2 and 4 Homerton High St, London E9 6JQ.

Elizabeth drew inspiration from the painting of Mrs Sadlier in the Great Chamber. In the painting she is coyly pointing at an orange tree. Orange trees represent happiness and prosperity so we embellished our portraits with tiny orange circles during our Workshop.

Tudor portrait miniatures were tokens of love and affection.

Everyone bought creative vibes to the Workshop, and expressed themselves in their own style - no two lockets were the same.

Barnet African Caribbean Association Ltd, is a registered charity established in 1997 which provides welcoming day services for older adults in Barnet.

We are currently fundraising towards an artistic work that will be made by Seniors who are members of the Barnet African Caribbean Association and other London Community Groups.

The artwork is called ‘Home’ and is based on the carpet design in the West Indian Front Room in the Museum of the Home. This installation, curated by Dr. Michael McMillan, explores the migrant experience of African-Caribbean families setting up home in the UK in the 1950/60s.
